The Game
This purpose of this games to create awareness for the impact we have on maritime life. The story of the game is a metaphor for how big corporations are destroying nature, but instead of the whole oceans and big corporations we decided to use a small underwater village and a monster. This makes it more comprehensible for the player to understand.
Mechanics
For This game we wanted to specifically create quests that really use VR to it’s advantage. So we wanted to make things that especially use motion controls because you don’t have those in non-VR games.
This is why I created a building mechanic where you could place bricks in a holder which it would then snap in to so you could build things like a wall.
Next I created a climbing mechanic with which you could scale a wall. It really felt like you were climbing and was a lot of fun to create and play.
For the final battle we decided to make it a sword fight. We did this so you could wildly swing your sword around trying to defeat the monster.
Dialogue
Another challenge we faced was creating a in game dialogue that was intractable in VR. At first we wanted to be able to “tap“ someones shoulder to speak with them but during play tests we discovered that you would then stand to close to the NPC to even see the dialogue. So we decided that you could just point towards them to speak with them, and then to skip to the next dialogue just point and click anywhere near the dialogue. This tested a lot better in the end.
